Inspired by F Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, it was one of a number of Twenties-inspired looks including calf-length slips, loose pantsuits and mannish sports jackets.
With her hair in a side-parting and frizzed at the ends, she looked virtually identical to the more experienced models walking in the show.
An though the fact that her famous mother was not present, she showed no trace of nerves, despite a star-studded front row including Emma Roberts, Amanda Hearst and Patricia Clarkson.
Prior to the show, the Alberta Ferretti team expressed their excitement at having such a famous model on the company Facebook page
They wrote: 'We are really excited to announce that Ms Sarah Margaret Qualley, Andie MacDowell’s daughter, will debut her model career today September the 14th at Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti fashion show in New York... We wish her good luck!'
In embarking on a career in modelling, Sarah Margaret follows in the footsteps of her sister, Rainey, 21, who juggles photo shoots with a budding career as an actress and singer.
Ms MacDowell herself, 53, who shot to fame after starring alongside Hugh Grant in 1994 film Four Weddings and a Funeral, was also a model for Vogue before breaking into acting.
She has since returned to her first career, and is currently one of the faces of L'Oreal.
Rainey and Sarah Margaret, with their brother Justin, are Ms Macdowell's children from her relationship with Mr Qualley, who she met while shooting a Gap campaign.
The couple were married for 13 years, from 1986 to 1999, during which time she referred to herself as Rosie Qualley.
